Optimizing Windows XP
Windows XP is highly customizable and is taken care to make a great deal of its twists easily accessible to users of any experience level. Experimenting with them and getting hands dirty is the best way to find private sweet spot in the mix of eye candy and system performance. One of the easiest ways to optimize XP is to simply use it. XP has some of built in files that are “smart”, well as smart as its manufacturer wants them to get. Anyway, these files observe the boot pattern and the programs that are run. Supposedly every three days the system optimizes itself by tweaking boot and load sequences based on past habits.
There are many ways to make computer run faster and handle more stuff you throw at it, but there are also many that are either irrelevant or just not needed for audio production. There are two ways to disable services. The easy way, and the hard way:
The easy way – On the start menu, click on run and type in “msconfig” and next click on the Services tab, will see a long list of services on your computer. Thankfully, its manufacturer supplies a way to filter the services used for the operating system. Check the windows XP Services at the bottom of the window.
The hard way – On the start menu, click run and type in “services.msc”. Will see a long detailed list of services on the computer and If click on any of them, will see a brief description, if provided. Unlike the easy way, cannot filter out the services from windows XP, but can arrange them in useful ways.

Protecting PC from spyware and adware
Some simple maintenance tasks once or twice a month can make a difference in the overall performance of your computer.
Spyware, adware, and viruses need to be detected and isolated frequently to maximize your computer’s efficiency.
Your hard drive and personal files must be managed and stored properly to ensure that they are not corrupted over time.
Valuable data should be backed up onto a separate storage source such as a CDR or DVD+R
Use the following steps to Clean Your PC and then review the steps in the Protect Your PC section to defend against the most common computer security problems.
Step 1 – Unwrap Dangerous changes using Windows System Restore
Undo dangerous changes to your computer by using the Windows System Restore feature. This tool returns your computer to a date before you installed that unwanted software or began receiving those annoying pop-up advertisements.
Step 2 – Remove malicious software
Installing Anti-Virus software and keeping the virus classification files current is the very best way to maintain the health of your computer. Test your PC’s exposure to online threats and learn more about recommended Anti-Virus solution at Security Connections.
Step 3 – Manage your hard drive more effectively

De-cluttering the Computer to free up Space
Unless a computer is fresh out of the box, it’s most likely not running as fast as it used to. PCs and Laptops fill up with all sorts of good stuff — documents, music, videos, programs, games, downloads — and bad stuff like spyware and viruses. Over time they can get bogged down. Much like oil changes for a car, a little periodic maintenance can help extend the computer’s lifespan. And in a tight economy, it’s smart to take a few simple steps to help keep the PC running like new, instead of buying a new one.
Empty your Windows Temp directory & Internet folder
Close all open programs in computer. Then open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\Temp.
Note: If Windows is installed on another drive, substitute the suitable drive letter for C:. While C:\Windows\Temp is the default location and common on most Windows systems, your temp directory and files would be shown. Press Ctrl-A on your keyboard to high-light the entire contents of the Temp folder and push the Delete key to get rid of all this junk.
Browser also stores a certain amount of web pages you have visited in its cache. The cache is actually just a folder on hard drive where it saves those temp files. To prevent this folder from taking up too much space in the future, open Internet Explorer, go to Tools/Internet Options/General/Temporary Internet Files/ entire content of the temp folder and files shown ,press Ctrl-A to highlight the files and delete . This is recommended for users who have a fast Internet connection.
Securing a Wireless Network from Malicious hackers
Being an innovative group in the world, the hackers are continually coming up with new ways to break through network defences. But their attacks can generally be grouped into these categories:
MAC spoofing
Hackers use MAC spoofing to impersonate a legitimate network user.
All network interface cards (NICs), like PCMCIA or PCI cards, provide a mechanism for changing their MAC addresses, issued by the manufacturer, that identify a specific device.
Denial of Service (DoS)
In a more common type of DoS attack, the hacker uses a laptop or PDA with a wireless
NIC to issue the floods of de-association frames, forcing clients to drop their association with the access point. Thus the hacker now controls access to the network.
Malicious association
The hacker configures his device to behave as a functioning access point.
When a user’s laptop or station broadcasts a probe for an AP, it encounters the hacker’s device, which responds with an association. At this point, the legitimate user’s computer can be mined for any and all information, including MAC address, SSID, pass codes, etc.
Man-in-the-middle attacks
The hacker sends a de-authorization to a network device, which drops its association to its access point and begins searching for a new access point. It finds the hacker’s station and associates with it, and allowing him to change or steal data at will.
Secure the Wireless Network:
• Adjust the default SSID.
• Use strong encryption.
• Set up mutual authentication between the client and the network.
• Use VPNs or WEP combined with MAC address control lists to secure business specific devices.
• Use uniqueness networking in combination with VLANs to restrict access to network resources.
• Make sure management ports are secured.
• Set up lightweight access points as they do not store security information locally.
Understanding the method to transfer files from one computer to another:
External storage media:
The market is full of USB and pen drives, which act as an external storage media, can be used to transfer files from one system to another. You just need to copy the files required from the system to the external device then connect it to the other system and transfer it from there.
Use of LAN for sharing:
Here you can transfer in two modes. First is wired one where the systems are connected with each other with a LAN cable.
Other is wireless transfer where the speed may be quite slow when compared.
If you are using the proper desktop, another method is to remove the hard disk of that system and connect it to the other system that way you can transfer the files easily.
This can only be done if the user knows how to properly remove and connect the hard disk in to the computer.
